The Primary Series is the first of six series in the Ashtanga System. Also known as Yoga Chikitsa, or Yoga Therapy, asanas are performed in a specific order, in an intelligent and scientific way, each pose preparing the body for more to come. Each pose has specific health benefits for the practitioner and when combined into a flowing sequence the body realigns and detoxifies, develops strength, flexibility and improves general health and well being. This is a challenging class. Be prepared to sweat!
Ashtanga yoga literally means "eight-limbed yoga," as outlined by the sage Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. According to Patanjali, the path of internal purification for revealing the Universal Self consists of the following eight spiritual practices:
Yama (moral codes]
Niyama (self-purification and study)
Asana (posture)
Pranayama (breath control)
Pratyahara (sense control)
Dharana (concentration)
Dhyana (meditation)
Samadhi (absorption into the Universal)
Ashtanga Yoga is multifaceted with a set sequence to the practice. There are Six Series in the Ashtanga System, but this class will focus on the basic postures of the Primary Series, also known as Yoga Chikitsa, or Yoga Therapy, leading to synchronizing movement with breath in a dancelike manner, also referred to as a moving meditation. This class is appropriate for those new to yoga, for those who want to learn Ashtanga Yoga, or for those who want a less strenuous practice.
Modifications will always be given when required or requested.
One by one you will learn 41 asanas.
Class times may vary. Please check the schedule.
